Focused Practice

Focused Practice lets a pupil build their own set of questions. They choose the question type, the level, the topics, the difficulty and how many questions to do, so it suits revising particular topics before a test. Focused Practice is part of the Ranger plan, including Ranger access provided by a school.

Building a set

A pupil starts by choosing multiple-choice (MCQ) or open-ended questions (OEQ), then a level, one or more topics and a difficulty. The questions available can narrow those choices. The last choice is length: MCQ sets can have 5, 10, 15 or 20 questions, and OEQ sets 3, 6 or 9.

For a quick start with open-ended questions, Ranger pupils can also use the Open-ended practice card on the Dashboard. Surprise me starts a short OEQ set, and How to use? explains how open-ended practice works.

Typed answers aren't kept if a pupil leaves Focused Practice before submitting them, so it's best to submit each answer before stopping.

Why are some questions left out?

Focused Practice normally leaves out questions the pupil has practised in the last seven days, so a new set favours questions they haven't seen recently. What happens next depends on how many questions match the pupil's choices:

  • Enough fresh questions: the pupil gets the set they asked for.
  • Only a few fresh questions: the pupil gets a smaller set. Adding topics, or changing the level or difficulty, usually brings in more.
  • All matching questions were practised recently: the pupil can tap Practise again anyway to do them again, or change their choices to find fresh ones.
  • No questions match at all: changing the topics, level or difficulty is the way forward.

Can a P6 pupil revise topics from P3, P4 or P5?

Yes. With Ranger, including Ranger provided by a school, a pupil can choose an earlier level and its topics in Focused Practice. On either plan, choosing All levels in the MCQ.SG worksheets list shows earlier-year sets, and teachers can also set worksheets from earlier levels. Topics first taught in lower levels often appear again in upper-level papers, so going back to them is a normal way to revise.

Does revising earlier-year topics cost extra?

No. There's no separate charge for earlier-year topics. What a pupil can use still depends on their plan: Focused Practice needs Ranger, while MCQ.SG worksheets can be used on the free plan within its daily limit of five MCQ answers. Plans and access explains the plans.

Sharing a set

A pupil or parent can share a link that opens the same Focused Practice choices of topics, level and settings. Each pupil needs Ranger access and does their own practice. It isn't a shared class activity, and answers aren't collected together.

Choosing a practice mode compares Focused Practice with the other ways to practise.
